Enjoyed an extended lunch break by watching the Clippers win another one with my Dad.

Sedentary Sunday

Our first overcast day in awhile came at the perfect time. It allowed for a breakfast burrito, football, work, football, sloppy joes, and finally, The Golden Globes.

We had a photoshoot yesterday, so my weekend is pretty much booked with editing.

The Realities of the Mark Up

We made the above piece. It cost us about $6.00 to make. We charged our client $12.30. Our client sold it for about $40 wholesale. We walked into Free People (a very popular “higher end” boutique) and found it on display for $148.

For the healthiest lifestyle, they say to eat like a king for breakfast, a prince for lunch, and a peasant for dinner. The last part is the hard part.

When My Dad Made Partner

So, my memory was a little hazy, but there was definitely a letter taped to the door (thanks Mom!). This is said letter my Dad taped to the door on that big day.

First of the new year.

The New Year’s Weigh In

A new record! 185lbs. Pfff.

My Dad officially stepped down today as Managing Partner of Seyfarth Shaw. As he says, it is the first step of a four or five year retirement plan. Whether or not retirement actually happens in that timeframe remains to be seen, but today was probably the most significant day of his career since making partner. I still remember the latter some thirty years ago…

Nothing like spending New Year’s Day at Santa Anita. Bet $20 on the longshot in the first race and won. The windfall paid for the rest of the day’s loses.

Rent, not own or lease.

It’s going to be tough adjusting to this weather after Hawaii.

Enjoyed dinner at the second Jean Georges restaurant of the month. Woe is me.

The Hawaiian nighttime sky reminds me a lot of being a kid in Alaska. You can look up for hours and see every constellation. Speaking of star sightings, the Hollywood kind are just as common at this small resort. Jimmy Kimmel, Katy Perry, Ben Stiller, Emily Blunt, John Krasinski and the Jonas Brothers are among those we’re sharing this place with.

Day #3

With the exception of a snorkel trip to a local beach and some shaved ice, we spent the day and night on the property.

Sonia is somewhere in there.

Day #2

We hiked to the Na Pali Coast, found the unhealthiest place for lunch, and retired by the pool until dinner.

The Na Pali Coast

The hike to the look out point almost gave me a heart attack, but the view was well worth it.

Day #1

We stuck around the property on day 1, because, well it’s an amazing property. Pool, beach, restaurant, repeat. And the 10 minutes the hotel could not find our reservation continues to pay off. In addition to the room on the beach, we have yet to pay for a meal.

Half a book to go.

Room With A View

This is our view from our room at the St. Regis on the North shore of Kauai. The benefit of arriving at 11pm on Christmas night to a sold out hotel that lost your reservation is the room upgrade. It was well worth the anxiety.

I’ll try to get the X-mas photos uploaded during the flight. In the meantime, here’s one that confirms my nephew, Kaden, has some serious swag.

I’m hoping one of these days I’ll have the time to put a little more effort into this goal, but I’m sure we will manage to make a few people smile on Christmas. I hadn’t been in a K-mart in over a decade, but paid a visit this morning to their layaway department and settled a couple of random accounts that were set to…

Once upon a time, my grandfather was an avid skier and member of his high school ski club. Although Sonia and I are not exchanging gifts this christmas, she had my grandfathers ski club pin turned into a necklace and gave it to me early so it wouldn’t break our no gifts rule.
